LSVT BIG® AND LSVT LOUD®

At Pottstown Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation, we offer both LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD® programs designed specifically for patients with Parkinson’s Disease. These programs are provided in one, convenient location with flexible scheduling.

What is LSVT BIG® Program?

The LSVT BIG® Program is for persons experiencing bradykinesia (slower movement) or hypokinesia (smaller movement) as a result of Parkinson’s Disease or other neurological disorders.

LSVT BIG® is a standard treatment protocol that is customized for each patient. It can be adapted or progressed for each patient depending on the severity of the disease and individual impairments.

Research on LSVT BIG® has shown improved function following treatment such as:

  • Faster walking with bigger steps
  • Improved balance
  • Increased mobility
  • Improvement with activities of daily living

Participants should be willing to complete the program which includes 16 sessions, four days per week, for four consecutive weeks. The sessions are one hour in length.

Daily homework practice and carry over of exercises is recommended to maintain improvements gained from the program. Some health insurance plans may cover this program with co-payments or deductibles required. Self-pay is also an option when insurance does not provide coverage for this service.

Getting Started

Patients require a prescription from a primary care physician or specialist for physical, occupational and/or speech therapy. A therapist will perform an evaluation and discuss your treatment plan which may include:

  • LSVT BIG® and LSVT LOUD® Programs (see program details)
  • If you are not a candidate for LSVT BIG or LSVT LOUD, traditional therapy one to two times a week may be appropriate
  • Speech therapy for swallowing impairments may also be appropriate

Follow up sessions will be discussed with a therapist and scheduled after the evaluation is complete.
