Weight Loss Surgery Options

Weight surgery is not a quick fix, but it can be part of a comprehensive plan to help you find weight loss success, relieve problems caused or worsened by obesity and jumpstart a healthier, more active lifestyle.*

At Pottstown Hospital, you can begin that journey with confidence. Our board-certified bariatric surgeons specialize in laparoscopic techniques, which typically require just a few small incisions. Compared to traditional, more invasive open surgery, these procedures often offer a host of benefits, including:

  • Less pain
  • Less scarring
  • Less risk of infection
  • Fewer complications
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery

LAP-BAND SURGERY

The name says it all: it's a band, laparoscopically inserted, that ties around the entrance to the stomach that limits the amount of food a patient can eat. Other bariatric surgeries, like gastric bypass, permanently re-rout around the stomach, and are much more surgically involved. The band on the other hand, is adjustable, reversible and requires a much less-involved surgery to install.

LAPAROSCOPIC GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY

"Roux-en-Y" gastric bypass surgery is considered the gold standard for weight loss surgery by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and is the most widely used procedure for patients seeking significant results. It works by making the stomach smaller, allowing for smaller meals, and by causing food to bypass part of the small intestine, causing less absorption of calories and nutrients and changes in hormones that help promote fullness.

LAPAROSCOPIC SLEEVE GASTRECTOMY

The name says it all: it's a band, laparoscopically inserted, that ties around the entrance to the stomach that limits the amount of food a patient can eat. Other bariatric surgeries, like gastric bypass, permanently re-rout around the stomach, and are much more surgically involved. The band on the other hand, is adjustable, reversible and requires a much less-involved surgery to install.
